Lou Castro is a working professional musician who has over 45 years of teaching experience in giving private lessons, teaching in-school classes and tutoring. He received a BA in Professional Music from Berklee College of Music in Boston. He’s a principal player in the local Hatteras Island band, Raygun Ruby. As the lone guitarist in this trio, Lou creates the band’s signature sound with every lick he plays.

He loves few things more than watching students of all ages grow in skill and proficiency. He finds nothing else to be more rewarding and the honor of teaching music is one of great inspiration for him. He has had the profound pleasure of seeing many of his past students go on to have meaningful careers in music.

Before he ever took a single music lesson, Lou seemed to have a deep and preternatural love for music. His first attempts at making music as a boy happened frequently when he would tie his Mickey Mouse record player to his bike by the power cable and drag it along behind him while he pedaled. This happened much to the chagrin of his dad who had to fix that record player multiple times. From there, his instruments progressed from a broom to a badminton racket, and finally, a tennis racket.

His music education began in earnest at age 9 when he began taking classical piano lessons. But the lure of the stringed instruments proved too strong for him to resist. By 11, he finally had a real guitar in his hands. By age 16, he had learned enough to start teaching lessons.

Lou’s life long story is one of unwavering passion and creative exploration. From his unconventional beginnings to his mastery of the various instruments he plays, he continues to captivate audiences with his dynamic and energetic performances.

He has been a member of the popular folk band, Molasses Creek, plus other bands including Coyote, Martin Garrish & Friends, The Ocracoke Rockers, The Aaron Caswell Band, Taken, and many many more. While recently spending two years on Florida’s Space Coast, he played with many of their local acts including Pink Spice Band, Brenda Evans, Broadband, and Blue Moon Rising.
